The Cattana Wetlands-Cairns

I actually felt nature tickling my bones.
The core of me was rapidly awoken.
Where had I been all my life?

I had been living in the human world.

A world full of dead things-plastic, glass and metal.
A world manmade, that ensures it’s survival by viciously sucking the life out of our wounded natural world.

The trees, the oceans, the rivers, the mountains, the animals, the landscape-are dying, a slow painful death, defenceless against the power of humankind.

Humankind, so powerful, yet so stupid.
-and such is our demise.

As I wandered, I felt every part of me absorb the life.
The life that nature so innocently and so brilliantly exudes.

My senses were drowning in this little piece of heaven.

I felt like a stranger.

Like I didn’t deserve to be here in this private place.

It belonged to the animals, to the sweet singing bird life, to the lily pads, the reeds, the frogs.

and yet I felt welcome.

The animals were not angry,
The trees were not suspicious,

they were simply trying to survive.

The stillness was suffocatingly spectacular.

I noticed my breath, as it deepened in the silence.

Sadness invaded my thoughts as I realised that I had forgotten what it felt like to be one with nature.

Sadness that this beautiful place, that once traversed the earth, was now defined by boundaries.

A little piece of nature surrounded by an 80 hectare prison wall.
An invisible wall that is the entry to the human world.
The human world you and I live in, that has forgotten what is important.

The slaughter of our environment continues.
The denial of it’s private struggle for survival, continues.
It has no defence.
It has no advocate,
It has little time.

It cries in the night, but everyone is sleeping.

Humankind- so evolved, so powerful, so destructive, so oblivious, so stupid.

-and such is our demise.
